It is our mission to ‘Connect People through Rounders’ and get more people from any background playing rounders, more often.
Rounders England is a non-profit sport’s national governing body (NGB) in England. As a membership organisation we provide a structure for the sport of Rounders, are responsible for the management and training of the England Squads and work alongside other home national governing bodies to provide competition opportunities.
At grassroots level, Rounders England creates competitions and opportunities for aspiring players to progress to whatever level of play is right for them; with a pathway to represent England at an elite level. We also provide information about the game, run coaching and umpiring courses, produce and sell resources and promote the sport at every standard.
Rounders is a cross-generational, cross gender game that embraces all abilities. It’s a game that’s all about sociability, about connecting with people in an age where screens separate generations and are replacing real and meaningful interactions. A game of Rounders makes great memories, offering an ideal balance between fun and fitness with great opportunities to make friends, get some exercise and have a good laugh away from the pressures of everyday life.
Across England there are 60 leagues facilitating 650 teams. Of notable worth is the work of Ready Steady Active, a community health and fitness initiative based in Batley & Dewsbury. This project provides sport and physical opportunities to hundreds of girls and women, but has responded particularly to the need of young girls and women from Muslim and South East Asian communities, who face a significant number of barriers to getting involved in sport and physical activity. A community rounders league was created within the project, currently engaging with 60 women and girls on a weekly basis. Alongside participating in sport, the project is having a positive impact through mentoring programmes and their focus on home schooled young people and their routes to employment.
Since 2012 the Getin2…Rounders programme managed by Burnley Leisure, which started off as a ‘just play’ session on a local schools’ rounders pitch that attracted 12 women, has grown to facilitating 2 leagues with over 24 teams and over 500 women playing Rounders on a weekly basis. The success of Rounders in Burnley means that it is a physical activity option for women and girls in the local community, all year round as it is played indoors as well as outdoors. Equal to the success of Rounders, the programme focuses on upskilling players to become leaders and umpires. As well as increasing participation levels, this additional facet strives to focus on individual personal development to sustain the game in the future.
