The leading Sport for Development charity StreetGames is working with Stonewall to help improve the experience of sport for LGBT young people.
A new project called ‘LGBT Inclusion Pilot Project’, which is being funded by BT Supporters Club, will test how StreetGames’ highly-successful ‘Doorstep Sport’ programme can include LGBT people and what more can be done to increase inclusion.
Hannah Crane, Director of People and Partnerships for StreetGames, said: “Sport should be enjoyable and accessible for everyone, whoever they are and whoever they love. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with Stonewall to learn more about LGBT people’s experiences of community sport and make sure that young people always feel they have a safe space.
“Sadly, discrimination still exists in sport as it does in all parts of society and it’s the responsibility of all of us to help to tackle it. We want to ensure that Doorstep Sport is an inclusive, open and fun environment for everyone.”
The first stage of this project will be to understand the experiences of young people and those delivering activity. Staff and volunteers who deliver community-based sport are being encouraged to access this survey, with participants asked to complete this survey. Both surveys will be open until 5pm on Monday 5th October.
Stonewall and StreetGames agree there are no right or wrong answers on the surveys, and the data will only ever be used in an aggregated form. Completion of the questionnaire is voluntary and therefore a young person has the right to decline to take part in the survey. Parental consent is required for anyone under 16 completing the survey.
