New funding supports 'Fit and Fed' delivery

Street Games is set to keep delivering its ‘Fit and Fed’ programme throughout 2021 after receiving new funding from the Linbury Trust.

The Trust, which is a UK-based grant-making foundation and part of the Sainsbury Family Trust network, has awarded the charity £80,000 over two years. The funding will support ‘Fit and Fed’ which tackles holiday hunger and encourages physical activity and team sports amongst young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in London, the North- East of England, Wales and Yorkshire.

BENEFIT

The programme launched in 2017 and provides healthy, nutritious food and fun activities to children and young people outside of term time. It has grown rapidly and is supporting children across the UK with more than 90,000 meals served to date.

The new funding, combined with a further grant from the Pears Foundation, will support the delivery of Fit and Fed in 24 local community organisations across Croydon, Flintshire (Wales), Sheffield and Sunderland during the 2021 summer school holidays. In total, more than 800 children will benefit from a summer of being properly fed, having fun and enjoying physical activity.

Mark Lawrie, StreetGames CEO, commented: “Our Fit and Fed programme has made real positive change in the lives of thousands of young people, and in the current climate that support is more important than ever.

“We’re incredibly grateful to The Linbury Trust for their support. This funding will make a huge difference to what we can achieve and will ensure that the brilliant community groups that make up our network can continue doing what they do best – supporting children and young people in the neighbourhoods they serve.”

OPPORTUNITY

Stuart Hobley, Director of The Linbury Trust added: “We’re really pleased to be supporting this programme that supports young people and not only tackles holiday hunger but gives children opportunity through engaging and co-operative activities.

“The grant will also help the local network of volunteers and partners with training in food and nutrition adding further to the impact on local people, and the work of StreetGames.”
