Festival gets 400 disabled people and carers active

London-based Disability Sports Coach gathered together 400 disabled people plus their families, friends and carers last weekend for a Community Club Summer Festival to try out 21 different sports.

The fourth version of the organisation's annual showpiece event was their biggest yet, and brought together members of their affiliated community clubs, disabled people's organisations, community groups and many intrigued newcomers.

The festival's aims are to inspire disabled people to be active, try new sports, meet friends and discover sport and non-sporting activities that Disability Sports Coach's partners provide.

As well as showcasing inclusive sports opportunities, the event at Westway Sports & Fitness Centre in North Kensington featured a performance by the Royal Society for Blind Children to raise awareness of activities available outside the world of sport.

Peter Ackred, Disability Sports Coach CEO, said: "We witnessed another fantastic event that we are incredibly proud to host, along with our partners' support, for hundred' of disabled people in the community.

"Though the day is an annual celebratory event, the target for us is to ensure disabled people find out about more opportunities to be regularly active, all year round. Our community clubs provide weekly local activities but the festival acts as a great way for our partners to promote their activities too."

Special guest Kate Grey, the former GB Paralympic swimmer, said: "Once again the DSC Summer Festival was a huge success. This was my third year attending and I really enjoyed seeing familiar faces from previous years as well as lots of new faces too. The variety of sports and activities available is what makes the festival so unique and a brilliant day out for all abilities."
