'Active Canaries' sees City adapt programmes

Norwich City Football Club and its Community Sports Foundation have launched a new project called 'Active Canaries' to boost the wellbeing of supporters during lockdown.

During the first two lockdowns in 2020, the club and Foundation participated in a community project to deliver thousands of food and care packages to local people. They also provided remote engagement activities and made thousands of calls to potentially vulnerable supporters.

In the third lockdown, the club has adapted its services to support those in the community who are in need. 'Active Canaries' began this week and provides activities, resources and inspiration to deliver support in three main areas: Get Moving, Get Learning and Get Caring.

Get Moving aims to promote the physical and mental benefits of exercise by helping supporters of all ages to stay fit. The club provides themed challenges to motivate individuals to exercise despite the closure of gym facilities and sports centres.

Get Learning helps children engage in fun, themed learning to support them overcome the challenges of learning from home. The Community Sports Foundation and Junior Canaries will provide resources in a different subject each week for Key Stages 1, 2 and 3.

Get Caring will provide ideas around gentle reminders to check in and connect with others to promote unity and keep the community strong.

Ian Thornton, Chief Executive of the Norwich City Community Sports Foundation, said: "Across the Foundation's programmes our team are working hard to provide remote engagement and activities, just as they have throughout the pandemic.

“We want to extend the reach of our support to anyone in the community that may benefit from it. We hope the three strands of Active Canaries will help people to care for themselves and others while restrictions continue.”
